In the Operating Room (OR) , the interdisciplinary team provides care to patients who require surgical intervention. Staff in the OR provide services to patients requiring surgery on an inpatient or outpatient basis depending on patient needs.
In the OR, nurses assume one of three positions - circulating nurse, induction nurse or scrub nurse. The circulating nurse directs and co-ordinates all perioperative nursing activities for an individual OR. He or she is responsible for maintaining knowledge of procedures, asepsis and the use and care of surgical equipment and supplies. The induction nurse´s main function is to support the patient during induction and emergent during anesthesia and to ensure patient safety. The scrub nurse plays an active role in anticipating the surgical team´s requirement during the surgical intervention.
Continuing knowledge development is supported by a number of initiatives including weekly unit inservices, annual competency updates, grand rounds, mentorship and certification courses.
The majority of patients require the following types of surgery:
Hand and Plastics Surgery
Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
Basic Cardiac Life Support (B.C.L.S.) Certification
One (1) to two (2) years recent Acute Care Nursing experience preferred (2020 New Graduates welcomed to apply)
Recent Operating Room experience preferred
Completion of a recognized Operating Room course preferred
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Excellent organizational and time management skills
Current, solid, Neurosurgery/Spinal, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedic Surgery preferred
